The Last House on the Left 2009 film Wikipedia

Like you could see him playing the heavy in a movie in a heartbeat. But once he was around his kids Bo and Jesse it was hilarious to see him pivot to the role of the neurotic Jewish dad. Once I saw him as someone I easily could have done many Passover seders with, I relaxed.

Remake

Last night, the pro-Hamas, antisemitic mob took over an academic building. I will continue to lead on this issue, and House Republicans will expand our efforts on oversight with additional committee chairs with an announcement later today. But it is hard to believe this bill will make any difference in really combatting antisemitism given that the Department of Education is already using this standard and given the basically meaningless nature of the change. A serious approach to the problem would be to pass the Countering Antisemitism Act, which has bipartisan and bicameral support and would involve concrete administrative steps to implement President Biden’s whole-of-government approach to fight antisemitism. The major departure in the 2009 remake comes in its ending, when we discover that Mari survived being shot and left for dead in the lake, and has made her way back home.

Full Cast & Crew

The Last House on the Left was theatrically released in the United States on March 13, 2009, and was a modest box office success, grossing $46 million against its $15 million budget. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with several deeming it worthy of praise in comparison to other horror films and remakes in general, while others considered it inferior to the original. “I’m proud to support this important legislation that will protect our brave Jewish students who are watching their campuses be taken over by unsanctioned mobs of antisemites by requiring the Department of Education to use the IHRA definition of antisemitism when enforcing anti-discrimination laws. This bipartisan bill based on a Trump-era Executive Order will force the failed leadership of universities, like Columbia and Harvard, to finally crack down on antisemitic violence and harassment against Jewish students and community members on their campuses,” said Congresswoman Elise Stefanik.

The Take: University protests spread across the US

Once you get past that initial revulsion – what kind of sicko would even want to see a movie like this? – the soul-sickening dread and panic that underscore the film’s images have a way of seeping into your system for ever. Rarely has there been so little distance between an audience and the raw emotion a film’s characters are experiencing on screen. The 2009 remake of "The Last House on the Left" was directed by Dennis Iliadis and produced by Wes Craven himself under his Midnight Pictures production company label.

Critic Reviews

“In a legal sense, for the purposes of enforcing criminal law or civil rights law against individuals, the IHRA definition is plainly unconstitutionally vague. It could never withstand a rigorous due process analysis for individual punishment because it does not give a reasonable person particular notice of what the proscribed speech or conduct is in even the most rudimentary sense. They also have said their rights are being trampled by administrators who seek to appease lawmakers, prompting at times violent police crackdowns on the encampments. The vote on Wednesday comes as renewed protests have swept across college campuses in opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza.

Phyllis distracts the kidnappers to give Mari an opportunity to escape but is chased by Sadie and Weasel, while Junior stays behind to guard Mari. Mari tries gaining Junior's trust by giving him her necklace and calling him "Willow". Phyllis stumbles across a cemetery where she is cornered and stabbed by Weasel. Mari convinces Junior to let her go, but her escape is halted by Krug. Mari vomits, quietly says a prayer, and walks into a nearby lake, where Krug fatally shoots her.

The bill is “therefore not needed to protect against anti-Semitic discrimination”, the letter said. Rights groups, however, have raised concerns the definition nevertheless conflates criticism of the state of Israel and Zionism with anti-Semitism. However, IHRA does specify that “criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as anti-Semitic”. Photos from the scene show that the house was decimated in the explosion and debris is strewn all around the suburban cul-de-sac. "Houses and cars around had windows blown out. Garage doors were pushed in. We didn't know if there was anybody in the house. All the houses were evacuated as soon as we got here."

It’s in the rare pantheon of films like “Cannibal Holocaust” that for horror fans are among the most brutal ever made. Craven cut the film numerous times for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to rate it R. Internationally, the United Kingdom refused to certify the film for release, and while briefly released on home video in the 1980s, the "video nasty" scare led to the banning of the film until 2002. The Last House on the Left was released in the United States on August 30, 1972.

Popular reviews

The attack on the girls is horrific, but the revenge is extremely satisfying. People love the film because it launched Wes Craven, who conquered horror in three separate decades, a feat still unmatched, and you can see the early seeds of ideas, such as a villain named Krug. Second, you have the incredible performances of David Hess and the rest of the cast, including a young Martin Kove, who if I’m not mistaken was Hess’ roommate and told him to go audition for the film. But really because the rape scene is still so disturbing and brutal and the punishment is so over the top that it has become one of those rite of passage films that if you love horror, to be a completist, you have to see it. You might not like it, you might want to take a shower after watching it, but you can’t pretend it doesn’t exist.

Mayor Muriel Bowser to empower the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to clear out the unlawful encampment and restore the rule of law to protect all students and staff. When they formed in 1964, the Moody Blues were called the M&B 5, using the initials of the brewery that owned clubs and dance halls where they had been playing. The name was a ploy to get money from the brewery to fund the band. So, Mr. Pinder told Classic Bands, he was inspired to create the name Moody Blues by tying together “the mood affecting changes of music” and the fact that the band’s repertoire at the time was primarily rhythm and blues. The story is also based on a true incident, we're told at the beginning of the movie, but I have my doubts; I think the producers may simply be trying one of those "only the names have been changed" capers. What does come through in "Last House on the Left" is a powerful narrative, told so directly and strongly that the audience (mostly in the mood for just another good old exploitation film) was rocked back on its psychic heels.

It took that long for the film to not be understood as a mere obscenity, without redeeming value. I knew the film would get dated with cell phones and things, but I wanted to keep it as acoustic as possible, if that makes sense. Classic score, practical effects, people playing acoustic guitar and using harmonicas like in “Phantasm” or films like that. One of the things I did to keep that vibe was using the “Last House on the Left” music. I loved it so much as a kid I wanted to see if modern audiences would accept it, and if they liked it, would get them to see the film and appreciate David’s music and Wes’ incredible early filmmaking.

Krug hides, and attacks John and Justin when they search for him. Justin is stabbed by Krug, but with a combined effort from Emma and John, Krug is knocked unconscious. John, Emma, Mari, and Justin then leave in the boat for the hospital. A storm forces Krug, Francis, Sadie, and Justin to seek refuge at a nearby house. Justin is the only one to deduce that the inhabitants, John and Emma, are Mari's parents, and intentionally leaves Mari's necklace on the counter to alert them about their daughter. When John and Emma find Mari barely alive on their porch, and the necklace on the counter, they realize that Mari's tormentors are the people in their guest house.
